William Tong is honored to serve the 147th District in the Connecticut House of Representatives. Now in his fifth term, Representative Tong represents the largest district in Stamford that includes North Stamford, Springdale, Westover, and the western part of Darien.

Representative Tong is the House Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which has broad jurisdiction over all criminal laws in Connecticut, the court system and all judicial nominations, and most substantive areas of civil rights, commercial and business law, real property, and probate. Representative Tong was previously House Chairman of the Banking Committee.

Despite an extraordinarily difficult budget environment, Representative Tong secured an unprecedented total of more than $135 million in state aid to Stamford and Darien in 2015.  Since Representative Tong joined the legislature, state education funding to Stamford has nearly doubled. At the same time, Representative Tong has fought to cut billions from the state budget, fought against tax increases, and provided millions in local property tax relief.

Representative Tong is also Co-Chairman of the Commission on Economic Competitiveness, which is focused on Connecticut’s strategy for growth and job creation and building on our strengths as one of America’s most productive states with one of the highest incomes per capita in the nation. Representative Tong has helped to bring major employers such as NBC Sports, Charter Communications, Kayak, and Starwood to Stamford.

A Connecticut native, Representative Tong attended public and private schools in West Hartford. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover, Brown University and the University of Chicago Law School. Representative Tong is now an attorney with Finn Dixon & Herling LLP, one of Connecticut’s leading corporate law firms. Representative Tong was previously an attorney with the international law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and a Management Consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.

Representative Tong is the oldest of five children, and grew up working side-by-side with his immigrant parents in their family’s Chinese restaurant. He and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Stamford with their three children and too many pets. Elizabeth is Vice President of Tax for North America for Diageo Corporation.

Representative Tong is proud to be the first Asian American to serve in the General Assembly, and the first Asian American to be elected at the state level in Connecticut’s history.
