Connecticut Attorney General William Tong Announces Re-Election Campaign

March 24, 2022

Friends,

I am excited to announce that I am running for re-election. I am more honored than ever to be your Attorney General, and determined to take on the hard work ahead of us.

We have had an extraordinary and consequential four years.  In the campaign, I will focus on my work forcing utilities to pay back consumers more than $100 million for their failed response to tropical storm Isaias, leading the multistate price-fixing litigation against Big Pharma and the generic drug cartel, investigating TikTok, Instagram and Facebook and holding them accountable for the threats their business practices pose to our children and our democracy, and securing restitution for Connecticut families and taxpayers on a wide-range of healthcare and consumer fraud issues, from robocalls to travel disruptions to price-gouging, especially prevalent during the pandemic.  In the years ahead, I will continue to fight harder than ever for Connecticut families.

I have worked particularly hard in the fight against the opioid and addiction crisis.  I led fellow Attorneys General in seeking even greater accountability against the addiction industry in the face of significant opposition from other states and played a pivotal role in securing a historic $32.5 billion in new funding to fight the opioid epidemic across the country, including approximately $400 million to Connecticut alone. This includes the second largest multi-state cash settlement in history with pharmaceutical distributors Cardinal, McKesson, and AmerisourceBergen and manufacturer Johnson & Johnson, as well as $6 billion I forced from Purdue and the Sacklers.  Through my negotiations, I also secured the opportunity for victims and their families to personally address the most egregious profiters in this tragedy – the Sacklers.

Here at home, my office has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for the state and Connecticut residents against bad actors in industries such as student loans and consumer finance, health care and retail electric suppliers.  I personally represented the state in the Connecticut Supreme Court in defense of the state’s effective response to the pandemic, and represented and counseled the Governor in the critical actions and measures that saved thousands of Connecticut lives.  And, notably, I settled two of the largest cases in state history that have challenged the state for more than 30 years, and which many thought could not be resolved:  the landmark desegregation case Sheff v. O’Neill and the Juan F. case against the Department of Children and Families.

I have been honored to serve as your Attorney General and look forward to continuing my efforts to protect the people of our state.  I know Connecticut families are strong, but it is my job to help make us stronger.  I hope to earn your support to continue this important work.

Warm regards,

William Tong
