While a state representative and co-chair of the Judiciary Committee, William Tong was a leading voice in passing some of the nation’s strongest gun violence prevention laws on the books, including those passed in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy. He led efforts to ban bump stocks and take guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. Now, as Attorney General, he is leading the defense of Connecticut’s lifesaving and commonsense gun laws against radical extremists in the gun lobby who will stop at nothing to push ever more deadly weapons of war into our communities.

When the U.S. Supreme Court issued its 2022 decision in Bruen and substantially rewrote major gun safety legal precedent, Attorney General Tong warned the decision would invite a wave of new litigation here in Connecticut. He was ready.

He’s since secured major wins in challenges to the state’s assault weapons and large capacity magazine bans, restrictions on guns in state parks, and he’s continuing to aggressively defend our state laws. Nationally, he’s joined forces with attorneys general to defend other commonsense state gun laws in courts across the country, including the Supreme Court.

He’s not just defending our state laws, he’s going on offense as well. He’s stopped multiple out-of-state ghost gun dealers from selling illegally into Connecticut. In 2025, Attorney General Tong helped secure new legislation to strengthen civil enforcement against gun industry bad actors. In his first action since that law was enacted, he sent a letter to Ruger regarding its semi-automatic pistols that can be easily converted into illegal fully automatic weapons using machine gun conversion devices.
