Donald Trump is using chaos to divide us. He is ignoring the Constitution to try to force us to turn our backs on our neighbors and friends, and the most marginalized and vulnerable among us– including our children, people of color, immigrants, and the LGBTQ+ community. Attorney General Tong will never give up, never surrender, never back down when it comes to protecting Connecticut families against the reckless and lawless Donald Trump.
He has sued the Trump Administration more than 50 times and is racking up major victories in courts across the country. A few highlights:
Tariffs: Attorney General Tong was among 11 state attorneys general suing and winning to stop Donald Trump’s lawless and erratic tariffs. He’s now demanding that Trump provide immediate refunds to businesses and families that paid these illegal taxes. A second lawsuit is now pending to block Donald Trump’s new round of illegal tariffs.
Birthright Citizenship: On his first day in office in 2025, President Trump issued an executive order to end birthright citizenship for countless children born in the United States to immigrant parents. Attorney General Tong immediately sued. This fight is personal. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1973, he became the first United States citizen in his immediate family by right of his birth on American soil. He was the first Asian American elected to state office in Connecticut history, and the first Chinese American to be elected Attorney General in the nation. Attorney General Tong was at the Supreme Court for oral arguments on the case in 2025.
Federal Funding Freeze: On the seventh day of his presidency, Donald Trump moved to categorically freeze trillions of dollars in essential funding nationwide for schools, highways, police, energy assistance, and more. Attorney General Tong sued on day eight to block Trump and protect Connecticut funding.
SNAP: When Donald Trump tried to arbitrarily and unlawfully suspend SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans during the government shutdown, Attorney General Tong and 25 other states sued and won.
School Funding: When Donald Trump and Linda McMahon tried to illegally withhold education funding to schools unwilling to promote MAGA ideology, Attorney General Tong sued, protecting access to nearly $400 million in Connecticut to support students.
Medical Research: When Donald Trump sought to cut billions of dollars in funds to support cutting-edge medical research, Attorney General Tong and 21 other attorneys general sued and stopped him, protecting research into treatments for heart disease, autism, Alzheimer’s, preventable newborn deaths and more.
ICE: Attorney General Tong stood with Minnesota in a legal brief challenging the Trump Administration’s extraordinary campaign of lawlessness and cruelty in Minneapolis. As the state’s chief civil legal officer, Attorney General Tong has made it clear that it is the policy of the State of Connecticut to respect, honor, and protect immigrants and immigrant families in compliance with state and federal law. He believes Connecticut must use every legal tool available to protect the constitutional rights of residents, and he has backed legislation to ensure that all public officials can be held accountable under state law for violations of federal constitutional rights, and codify under state law what had long been federal policy to prohibit federal civil immigration enforcement actions in sensitive locations including churches, schools, and hospitals, among other measures.
Reproductive Freedom: Abortion is safe, legal, and accessible in Connecticut, and Attorney General Tong is fighting alongside women, patients, and providers in every court in every state where reproductive freedom is threatened to keep it that way. He’s not going to let extremist politicians micromanage our healthcare decisions and endanger the health and safety of Connecticut families. He’s helped to counter disinformation and legal threats by working with the Reproductive Equity Now Foundation to start the Connecticut Abortion Legal Hotline to provide patients and providers with free and confidential legal advice and information.
Gender-Affirming Care: Attorney General Tong is fighting for the rights of families and doctors to make personal medical decisions free from hateful partisan interference, that includes leading the multistate coalition blocking the Trump Administration’s threat to cut off hospitals and clinics who provide gender-affirming care from accessing Medicare and Medicaid.
Climate: Attorney General Tong is at the forefront of actions challenging the Trump Administration’s reckless efforts to undermine and rollback federal regulations and funding to protect our climate and environment. In 2026, he led a coalition of 24 states and 12 counties and cities challenging EPA’s unlawful attempt to rescind the 2009 Endangerment Finding which determined that greenhouse gas pollution from motor vehicles drives climate change and endangers public health and welfare. He’s fighting to protect vital programs that make solar energy accessible to low-income families. He’s taken numerous legal actions to force regulation of cross-state air pollution that harms Connecticut from other states He’s challenged Donald Trump’s fake “energy emergency” manufactured to turbocharge fossil fuel industry profits at the expense of public health and welfare, among other actions.
