Navient: In January 2022, Attorney General Tong announced a $1.85 billion settlement with student loan servicer Navient that will direct millions in debt relief and restitution to thousands of Connecticut borrowers.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness: In November 2025, Attorney General William Tong and 21 other attorneys general sued the U.S. Department of Education for unlawfully restricting eligibility for the PSLF program to exclude employers and professions which they disfavor. The PSLF allows government and nonprofit employees–fire fighters, police, doctors, nurses and public interest workers–to have their federal student loans forgiven after ten years of service. Attorney General Tong has also consistently joined with other attorneys general in pushing the federal government to resolve persistent issues with the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
Attorney General Tong joined with attorneys general repeatedly pushing the federal government to provide debt relief to student victims of for-profit college bad actors Corinthian and ITT, leading to the largest loan discharges in history.
